Policymaking for Coastal Resilience | Harvard University

Policymaking for Coastal Resilience | Harvard University

This course explores the complexity of crafting environmental policy that supports coastal resilience and encourages implementation of needed measures. Whether focusing on governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or the business community, there are common approaches that can facilitate moving forward toward more robust sustainability and resiliency outcomes. Case studies of coastal resilience on multiple continents illustrate the challenges facing local and regional policymakers and can provide perspectives for fostering the development of best practices. There is a need for adopting a multidisciplinary framework with which to craft policy changes and embrace innovative approaches. Current technologies for tracking climate change effects on coastal communities can facilitate a more accurate assessment of the probability of significant coastline alterations and the associated vulnerabilities. These assessments provide a basis for integrated policymaking and effective planning.
