Description

Introduction to the use of polymers in the production of clean energy based hydrogen/oxygen fuel cells and clean water. The first five weeks of this course is devoted to the fundamental aspects of polymers necessary to understand the applications in energy and the environment. This includes polymer chain configuration, morphology of solids, and linear viscoelasticity. The remaining five weeks of class will be devoted to applications, with emphasis on membrane transport.

Prerequisites

At least one college-level course in general chemistry, one college-level course in organic chemistry, and one college-level course in physical chemistry.

Topics include

  • Thermal transition behavior
  • Polymer blends and block copolymers
  • Ion, gas, and water transport
  • Completely degradable biocomposites
