Description

The co-evolution of genetic engineering and biotechnology in the last 30+ years has allowed for groundbreaking findings in molecular biology that have revolutionized our understanding of nature and its applications in society. Discovering that genetic code could be manipulated and added to various organisms led to developing transgenic techniques in yeast, plants, animals and even humans.

This course will expand your understanding of genetic research and give you the perspective to form your own opinions on controversial topics within the field. Further your knowledge of genome research, gain greater awareness of the benefits and risks, and explore the latest research and technologies advancing the science of genetic engineering and biotechnology.

This course is an elective course in the Genetics and Genomics Program.

What you will learn

  • Methods to produce different genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Applications of genetic engineering in biotechnology
  • Characteristics and classes of drug development
  • Technology licensing and patents in life sciences
Time to Complete

You should expect to spend 10-18 hours to complete each course, depending on your familiarity with the topic.

For individual courses, we recommend that you designate 2-3 hours per week to watch video lectures and complete assignments in order to finish within 60 days.

Since the All-Access Plan allows you to access all courses for one year, you can determine how quickly to progress, but you must complete courses with 365 days in order to receive credit.

Certificate

You earn a Stanford Certificate of Achievement in Genetics and Genomics by successfully completing the two required and any four elective courses.  You may enroll in courses individually or  through the All-Access Plan.

Continuing Education Units

By completing this course, you’ll earn 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU).  CEUs cannot be applied toward any Stanford degree.  CEU transferability is subject to the receiving institution’s policies.
