Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Epidemiology

Epidemiologists and clinical researchers gain a strong foundational knowledge of probability and statistical theory. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding, rather than just black-box application, of advanced statistical methods with a focus on medical applications. Students may use either R or SAS statistical software. This course was formerly numbered HRP259.

Topics Include

  • Probability
  • Random variables
  • Expectation
  • Variance
  • Probability distributions
  • Central limit theorem
  • Sampling theory
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Confidence intervals
  • Bayesian analysis
  • Descriptive statistics
  • Tests for comparing groups
  • Regression
  • Generalized linear models

You Will Learn

  • To think about, look at, and describe data
