Description

Building Information Modeling plays a significant role in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. It encompasses a range of dynamic computer representations that incorporate layers of detail with high levels of accuracy.

This foundational Building Information Modeling course introduces techniques for creating, managing, and applying building information models in the building design and construction process. The course covers processes and tools for creating, organizing, and working with 2D and 3D computer representations of building components and geometries to produce models used in architectural design, construction planning and documentation, rendering and visualization, simulation, and analysis.

There will be six design projects – each consisting of design and modeling work. All assignments will be individually scored and these determine the overall grade, there are no exams for this course.

Basic course logistics and software requirements

Please note: this course is online-only. Lectures will not be captured on campus, all videos and materials will be available on the course platform.

Recommended for CEE MS Programs: Structural Engineering and Geomechanics (SEG), Sustainable Design & Construction (SDC)

Prerequisites

Familiarity with the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.
Previous use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.

Topics include

  • Accurately model building elements (walls, doors, windows, roofs, circulation, infill, etc.)
  • Create custom parametric model elements and geometries
  • Model-based analysis (structural, energy use, and construction planning)
  • Performance-based, analysis driven design
  • Rendering, animation, and visualization
  • Time-phased design and design options
